There are several counseling departments available to serve you at City College of San Francisco as well as four different Retention Programs housed under the Multi-Cultural Retention Services Department. The counselors in these various departments are all part of a COUNSELING TEAM and are all here to help you find your way through City College and to assist you in completing your educational goals.
Student Counseling
So, which counseling department is best for you?
New Student Counseling Department:
Counselors work with any student with less than one year of college or with less than 24 units. Counselors provide orientation to students in both credit and non-credit who are new to the college; guide students in the development of their educational plan; lead students to essential support services; and assist students with personal concerns and the development of good study skills. NSCD counselors can assist students to discuss requirements for a certificate, degree, or transfer to a 4-year institution at any of the CCSF campuses. Continuing Student Counseling Department:
Recently, International, Career and Transfer Counseling merged under the auspices of the Continuing Student Counseling department which has resulted in the relocation of some offices and counselors. See below for more information.
Continuing Student counselors work with any student who has completed a year of college or 24 or more units and assist students with transfer, graduation, choosing a major, re-entering college, changing careers and more. For an appointment, please call (415) 452-5235. Office: MUB 39
International Student Counseling Program:
provides comprehensive services for all credit international students (F-1 visa holders) enrolled at City College of San Francisco. At ISCP we provide international students with support services directed at assisting you in achieving your academic and personal goals. The ISCP provides counseling services for academic matters, personal concerns, visa and immigration issues, career development, cultural adjustment, and more. (415) 239-3942; Office: MUB 125.
Appointments are available to students/alumni seeking assistance in choosing their major and/ career choices. Career counselors will assist in career assessment, career exploration, career planning, and career coaching/mentoring. Career Counseling also offers several career–related workshops throughout the semester as well as a Career Fair. (415) 239-3117; Office: MU 39.
Transfer Counseling's mission is to facilitate students' transition to baccalaureate institutions, provide educational planning and assistance for transfer, and coordinate a calendar of university advising and outreach services. For more information Tel : (415) 239-3748. Office: Science 132.
Disabled Students Programs and Services:
If you are a student with a disability that can be verified, you may choose to work with the Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS). All services and records are confidential. Your involvement with DSPS can be thought of as a partnership between you and the Disabled Students Programs and Services staff. The DSPS staff consists of counselors, disability specialists, faculty members, technology and media specialists, instructional assistants, sign language interpreters and captioners, and office staff. You may notice some overlap in the services offered by some of the departments. It is advisable to find a counselor you work well with- the choice is yours. And, you may see more than one counselor, in different departments, at the same time!
